THE THREAD OF JESUS
“Trust the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your path” Proverbs 3:5-6(ESV).
THE WEAVER — CORRIE TEN BOOM
‘MY LIFE IS BUT A WEAVING BETWEEN MY GOD AND ME,
I CANNOT CHOOSE THE COLOURS HE WEAVETH STEADILY.
OFT TIMES HE WEAVETH SORROW, AND I IN FOOLISH PRIDE
FORGET HE SEES THE UPPER, AND I THE UNDERSIDE.
NOT ‘’TIL THE LOOM IS SILENT AND THE SHUTTLES CEASE TO FLY
WILL GOD UNROLL THE CANVAS AND REVEAL THE REASON WHY.
THE DARK THREADS ARE AS NEEDFUL IN THE WEAVER’S SKILLFUL HAND
AS THE THREADS OF GOLD AND SILVER IN THE PATTERN HE HAD PLANNED.
HE KNOWS, HE LOVES, HE CARES; NOTHING THIS TRUTH CAN DIM,
HE GIVES THE VERY BEST TO THOSE WHO LEAVE THE CHOICE TO HIM.
This little poem really moved me. I reflected on how slowly worries, struggles, and hardships can be woven into our lives—so slowly, we don’t even notice it’s happening. Bit by bit, we allow these burdens to manifest in our thoughts and even in our hearts. Negativity creeps in, and our lives seem to grow darker. In our foolish pride, we try to battle these challenges alone, often feeling encased in a zippered sleeping bag. This dark blanket blinds us, and we grow weary, trying to escape. We may not even realize when the weaving of darkness began. We might push it back and ignore it in the early stages, but the dark weaving continues through our thoughts. At times, bitterness and anger arise, and panic may set in. Yes, this sounds bleak. I’ve been there, and many others joined this struggle of the mind. But there is hope. There always is because there is the thread of Jesus.
God allows events to unfold in our lives. He may not be the creator of those dark moments, but he permits them for a purpose. Recognizing God’s purpose during dark times can be challenging. However, when we are still before Him and trust that His threads of love and light can dull the dark threads that threaten our joy, He brings light back into our lives. We can begin to see His purpose and understand the reasons behind our struggles. Instead of fighting in the darkness, we must let God pull back the canvas, revealing His purpose and guiding us out of that dark sleeping bag. Life becomes clearer when we trust God. We emerge with our faith burning hotter as we witness His threads of gold and silver shine brighter, offering clarity and truth about how loving our omnipresent God is.
I also reflected on how intricate God’s weaving is through our lives. Psalm 139:13 tells us that He knitted us together in our mother’s womb—a beautiful visual. How precise were every detail and thread as we were crafted with His loving hands? God is the Great Weaver who creates a beautiful tapestry of our lives. We are His handiwork, His masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10). He weaves our lives together with carefully chosen, perfect threads.
Sometimes, we forget about our Perfect Creator when we look at ourselves. We see only the underside—a tangle of broken threads, knots, missed stitches, and all our mistakes. In our desire to improve or create beauty, we try to add our threads, forgetting to see ourselves as God sees us: a wonderful masterpiece. What He observes is not merely our outer shell; He looks deeper into our hearts. God does not want us to alter the beautiful work God has woven together. He desires our trust, knowing He is still weaving our lives and pulling on the threads to draw us closer to Himself. God’s golden and silver threads can never be overshadowed by the dark weaving of lies, worries, or torment.
Corrie ten Boom once said, “Although the threads of my life have often seemed knotted, I know BY FAITH that on the other side of the embroidery, there is a crown.” Many of us may have witnessed the messy underside she describes in her poem. But when God looks at us, He sees the crown.
I think of the blood shed for us—the purity of each drop that God used to cleanse us and wash away our troubles, worries, and sins. The binding thread knits us into the beings God created us to be. He has yet to tie a knot on this thread because He is still weaving our lives with every stitch of His love. It’s the thread that binds us to Jesus, which can never be broken, frayed, or severed.
Prayer: Thank You, Father, for being the true Master Weaver of our lives. In Jesus’ name, I pray that when dark threads seem to cloud our thoughts, in faith, we know Your golden and silver threads are right behind, bringing light into our lives. Thank You for delicately weaving through us; as You do, we are constantly transformed into the image of our Lord and Savior. Help us step back and trust You, Lord, with all our hearts. In those moments we don’t understand, let us submit and acknowledge You, believing that You have our best interest at heart. Open our eyes to see ourselves through Your lens, removing our fear of what lies ahead. I pray we step aside and allow You to pull back the canvas to reveal Your light in our lives. May Your threads draw us closer to You as we worship and glorify Your Holy Name. Amen.
