“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12. (ESV).
For some people, confession, as a practice, has taken a back seat, and for others, it seems to be all that we do to get right with God. Confession is an important aspect of our Christian faith, as it allows us to acknowledge our sins and ask for forgiveness from God.
The act of confessing one’s sins is mentioned throughout the Bible, with various verses emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and repenting for one’s actions. 1 John 1:9 states, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” This verse highlights the forgiveness God offers to those who confess their sins and the cleansing power of confession. James 5:16 tells us, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working”. This verse emphasizes the importance of confessing one’s sins to others, not just God. Confessing to others can bring accountability, healing, and the power of prayer. The book of Proverbs teaches that hiding our sins does not lead to prosperity and blessings; instead, confessing and forsaking them will lead to mercy and forgiveness (Proverbs 28:13).
Confession is a powerful way for us to receive forgiveness and cleansing from God and to find healing and accountability through the support of others. These scriptures remind us whether we feel the need to confess our sins, minutes by minutes of our day, to God or are resistant to confessing; one truth remains, confession is God’s principle to help us walk in freedom from earthly bondage.
How, then, do we begin the process of confessing our sins?
-
Begin by acknowledging and admitting your sins to yourself. This step requires honesty and self-reflection.
-
Seek forgiveness from God by praying and asking for His forgiveness. This requires humility and a willingness to turn away from your sins.
-
If possible, confess your sins to a spiritual leader, a trusted person, and a confidant. This step allows for guidance and support in the confession process.
-
Make amends for any harm caused by your sins, if possible. This step requires responsibility and a commitment to changing your behavior.
-
Seek to live a virtuous life going forward with the help of God’s grace. This step requires ongoing effort and commitment to living in accordance with God’s will.
The writer of Hebrew tells us that the Word of God is alive in our lives and discerns our thoughts and intentions (Hebrew 4:12). The Word is Christ, and He seeks to mend all our crooked ways to breathe truth in us.
It is important to remember that confessing our sins is an ongoing process, as we are all imperfect and continue to make mistakes. It is through the act of confessing and seeking forgiveness that we can strive to live a more virtuous life. One God intended. One that brings glory to our Father.
Prayer of Confession:
Heavenly Father, we come before you in humility and repentance. We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. We have not loved you with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We confess that we have disobeyed your commands and rebelled against your authority. We have been selfish and self-centered and sought our own pleasure and gains instead of your glory.
We confess that we have been prideful and arrogant and have not acknowledged our dependence on you. We have not trusted in your goodness and faithfulness and have not sought your will in our lives.
We ask for your forgiveness and mercy. We believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and that his death and resurrection provide the only way for us to be reconciled to you. We trust in his finished work and receive his gift of eternal life.
We ask that you renew our minds, transform our hearts, and empower us by your Spirit to live for your glory. We pray that you would help us to forgive others as you have forgiven us and to love you and others as you have loved us. We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
