Jesus is NOT my co-pilot
When I was a teenager, I read a book about a fighter pilot from World War II who served with the famous Flying Tigers air group fighting with the Chinese Nationals. The name of the book was “God Is My Co-Pilot.” I found that title fascinating for its metaphorical outlook, and the interesting concept of God constantly joined with us in our actions. At least that’s how my young, non-Christian mind interacted with it. It has been a phrase forever locked in my mind from the very first day I got the book.
However… Now that I have spent a significant amount of time “flying” with my Lord and Savior, I wish to categorically make the following declaration:
Jesus is NOT my co-pilot.
Put directly and categorically – He is the one and only PILOT of my journey. Frankly, if I am trying to fly the plane and relegating Jesus to the #2 seat – then my journey is potentially horribly lost or about to be. It may be cool to think that I AM IN CHARGE, but it is not a thought that I wish to entertain in any way.
Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. 1 Chronicles 29:11 NIV.
Now, let me take it a step further. The bigger truth is that the whole plane is HIS! He has invited me on board for a journey of amazing and empowering victory. And I serve as His co-pilot, at His discretion. It is still overwhelming when He turns to me on numerous occasions and says, “You take it for a while.”
I am so humbled that God invited me onto this flight. The journey has been completely awe-inspiring, and I have seen so much. The view from the “right hand” seat is actually quite good! Truly, if He asked me to go ride in the baggage compartment, I am all for it. Just never ask me to depart the plane, LORD!
So today, I am happy to report that I have established a NEW catchphrase that has moved to the forefront of my mind. I know it might be considered a bit broad as I say it, but His truth is often found in large and all-encompassing concepts.
Jesus is my EVERYTHING!
Amen.

Thank you Rick for the wonderful description of a blessed life with Jesus! How often I forget that I am not required to take the wheel!
